Week Three: the Minimalist Wardrobe

Week Three the Minimalist Wardrobe

I had a really great idea for Week Three of downsizing my wardrobe. I decided to enlist the help of one of my friends!

The Plan:

  • Sit her down
  • Hand her a glass of wine
  • Make her look at each piece of clothing and listen to my reason for keeping it

The Point:

  • If I was embarrassed to show her the item then it had to go
  • If my reasoning for keeping it sounded ridiculous then it had to go
  • If I couldn’t say “I LOVE it” then chances are, it had to go

There was a big flaw in this great idea… she wasn’t available this week.

Oh, well.

I still made progress.

WEEK THREE Recap

I removed each category of clothing (which is how they are arranged anyway) from my closet and piled them on my bed.

I made the following stacks:

LOVE

EH

NOPE

This actually worked well! I immediately put the “Loves” back in my closet (changing out the hangers to the black velvet ones) and then I addressed the “Eh” ones. Some went to the closet and some ended up as “Nopes.”

The great news is that I have approximately 200 pieces hanging in my closet all on MATCHING HANGERS! And there are 45 items ready to be sorted into sell or donate piles.

There were two other things I did…

I started a list of the items that are missing in my wardrobe, like a tank with a certain neckline or a particular style of black dress pants.

Also, I listed items that I need to replace.

With the items I need to replace, I took it a step further… since I am not ready to get rid of them until I have a replacement, I tied a ribbon to the hanger to indicate that it needs to be reassessed.

When I am out shopping, I now have a list of what to find. If I do not love it, I will not bring it home.

Even though my brilliant original idea for this week didn’t happen; what I got done feels good.

I still have more to do. I am currently doing a ton of laundry so I can sort through those the same way, but otherwise giving myself a break for a few days.

With that said, I’m sure you know what I am going to do next week…

Sit my friend down in that chair and hand her a glass of wine!

What do you consider to be a good amount of clothing items to have in your closet?

How many do you have?

  1. Such a good idea! I need to try this, I’m constantly downsizing my closet but I still feel like I have too much. Love, eh, & nope piles are happening tomorrow!

  2. I do the same thing-3 piles. I love the tieing a ribbon around the hanger idea. I am definitely going to do that!

  3. The friend is critical! It really helps me let go of things I’m unsure about. Next time I think I will give her the camera so I save a step & can post it for sale to Poshmark the next day! I do feel this purging is an ongoing process that is never quite done. Thanks for the post and the motivation, keep the updates coming!
